Project 4 Montage

ScottSilva-p4Montage-Train

Description: A spiritual inspirational poster I created.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing): I began by acquiring an image of outer space, filled with lots of stars. I then obtained an image which was a close-up of a father supporting his infant’s hand with his finger. Using Photoshop I placed the hand picture on top of the outer space image, and muted the colors in the hand, and then layered them with “Overlay” so the colors of the space picture would integrate onto the hands. I added blue hues. I then added an S-curve onto the entire image by adjusting the Levels to add contrast. Cloud images were adjusted. I caused the edges of the hands images to become faded so the edges were lost and the 2 images became as one. I wanted to add a texture to the whole thing but when thinking about popular choices like “concrete” or “crumpled paper” I realized these things contradicted the natural theme of the image. I wanted something organic. I found water textures of a lake and ocean with criss-cross patterns. Water is the source of all life, and the edges complimented the curves of the already existing two images, so I felt like it was a good match. Finally I added the text and darkened the area behind it.

Message: The message behind this image is that the same Being who created the incomprehensible Universe, also created you. I find that powerful.

Audience: This poster is intended for a religious audience who believes in a God or spiritual creator who made all things. It is a broad and universal spiritual message.

Top Thing Learned: How to better combine different typefaces.

Filter / Colorization used and where it was applied: Blue hues and water texture was added. The water texture was muted out though on the subject of focus: the hands.

Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic, cyan/blue.

Project 3 Photo Design

P3-ScottSilva

  1. Description: A flier I created for a fictional event/promotion.
  2. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): The photo was taken by me with my camera, a Canon Rebel T3i, and Photoshop and InDesign was used to create the design elements of the flier itself.
  3. Message: The message here is a fictitious one; to join an archeology expedition that is seeking more people who may be interested.
  4. Audience: The audience intended would be young college students who have an interest in humanities or archeology. A “Pirates of the Caribbean” theme was used to market towards the current generation.
  5. Top Thing Learned: I learned how to use my own creative content mixed with design elements found in Photoshop. The potential is great.
  6. Color scheme and color names: Complimentary color schemes were used, a mix of Purple and yellow. The yellow was the dominate color of the photo, so that’s why I chose it as the primary and the purple to be the contrast.
  7. Title Font Name & Category: Monotype Corsiva – Script
  8. Copy Font Name & Category: Copperplate Gothic Light – San Serif
  9. Thumbnail of original, unedited image inserted IMG_1868
  10. Date and location you took the photo(s): Photo was taken 10/15/2015 on my kitchen table. Prop used was my wife’s trinket box which is themed like a pirates treasure chest. Macro lens was used to bring out the details and give a close up. It doesn’t look as scary from a distance!

I’m not really a photographer, but I enjoyed seeing how I could become creative with this activity even though I have never had a passion for photographs. That said, I am a videographer, and the principles of photography apply to the basic principles of film. The outdoors shot has a wire going across the horizon which splits the image and makes the whole picture seem manipulated somehow, but it is oddly a natural occurrence that I would liked to have removed if I knew PhotoShop better. When setting up for the indoor light shot I used a mix of natural light with practical light that I added via common sources. I dropped food coloring into a glass and took a succession of photos. The biggest challenge was getting the whole cloud of liquid in focus because with a shallow depth of field, only a few pixels worth would be in focus on such an ameba-like shape. This meant I had to put my camera to Manual settings and set up for a deep-focus. To do this I increased my shutter-speed and closed the aperture. I raised my ISO to compensate. The result is the entire volume of the water in focus. I later edited the colors of the dye in Photoshop slightly using the Selective Color adjustment.

My living room becomes this magical-like light-room for about 15 minutes during golden hour. The whole room turns golden orange and vibrant because my window directly faces the sunset unobstructed. I waited for this time and asked my wife to stand directly into the light and smile. We have a ceiling light thats somewhat big. Originally it was directly left of her face in the background of this shot and was very distracting. Using Photoshop I was able to remove it.

Project 2 Event Ad

P2ScottSilva.jpg

Description: An event flier ad I created to showcase a fictional event called the “Garden Fundraiser.”

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): For software, I used Microsoft Word only.

Message: The message of this flier ad is to come to a fundraiser in the form of a gardening event.

Audience: The audience is focused more on women than any other demographic. Yet also applies to anyone, regardless of gender, who may be interested in gardening and plant science.

Color scheme and color names: All colors were pulled from the original image to use as a base. From there, custom colors were created and manipulated to give variety.

Top Thing Learned: The thing I learned the most from creating this ad flier was how to use Microsoft Word in order to do thing that look like they were created in InDesign.

Title Font Name & Category: Monotype Corsiva: Script (to match the image typeface)

Copy Font Name & Category: Calibri: San-serif

Scanned images used, sources, original sizes, location of scanner used: A scanner was used in my home to upload the flower image. The image was scanned from my wife’s calendar. I own no magazines, print ads, or image books.

Project 1 Flier

Scott-Silva-Indesign-Flier

Description: A flier I designed, advertising the Graduate Leadership Conference.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I used Adobe InDesign as the main piece of software for this creation. The principle of proximity was used in order to differentiate the title with the body of the design. Alignment and asymmetry was also used when configuring the positioning of the text and images.

Message: I am communicating to recent graduates or soon to be graduates with this piece of media.

Audience: 21 to 30 year olds who are recently graduated.

Top Thing Learned: The top thing I learned was the importance of alignment and keeping the size of proportions relative to each other.

Cover Letter

I am Scott Silva from Elk Grove, California. I am a BYU Idaho graduate who studied video production and business skills. I have accomplished a variety of things in my life from producing short films, to traveling to Mexico to deliver medical supplies to orphanages. However, what truly defines my character is my dignity, my passion for team work, and my communication skills.

My experience revolves around the skill-sets required for this job. Previously I have worked for the Walt Disney Company, which includes being extended jobs from both theme parks within the United States. While working in Walt Disney World specifically, I learned how to comprehend guest’s concerns from their perspective and communicate with them to meet a resolve that left them happy. As an Executive Producer over a video team for advertising, I know how to communicate an abstract idea into simple terms, while working in creative teams to collaborate towards a common goal. I briefly worked with Aflac as an insurance agent. Within the company my responsibility was to pitch a package to business managers in a professional way that was convincing to both them and their employees.

Between being an Executive Producer for ad campaigns, Aflac, and guest relations with Disney, as well as my two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I have spent the majority of my life learning how to create and pitch individualized content to suit the needs of a target audience or person. My people skills are invaluable. Outside of this, my desire is to work in an environment of professionalism. I look forward to meeting with you.

Class Summaries

John Thompson

I-COMM Introduction

Brother John Thompson talked about the in’s and out’s of I-COMM. He spent some time talking about Scroll and Soapbox Agency, and we also heard from Andrew Murdoch and Juan Carlos, two individuals I work with in Soapbox whom are Agency Manager and Traffic Manager, respectively. There wasn’t anything new that stood out to me that was said about I-COMM or Soapbox Agency that I can honestly say I “learned” about. Brother Thompson spoke about the importance of building a portfolio and the advantages that gives you, even over good grades or a degree. In this industry people care more about what you can do, who you know, if you’re easy to work with, and what you have done, more than what your GPA was.

Our Blog / Journalism / News

Lane Williams came in and spoke about the relevance of news and journalism in our society as people and how to get more involved. He stated that if you’re a Comm major, no matter what department, you should be keeping up to date with current events and the news, which is something I strongly agree with. I am glad that broadcast and media journalism exists, but working in that industry was never anything that intrigued me. I learned that my choices I made earlier about not wanting to go into journalism was a choice I still don’t regret.

Video Production

This was the day I was absent. That said, for what it’s worth, I have a video production emphasis and have taken multiple classes from Bro Howard over the years and I learn video production from Brother Mawlam, outside of class, on an almost daily basis. I have learned a lot from Brother Howard from his various classes. Brother Mawlam has been a huge mentor for me within Soapbox Agency and continually critiques my video production to make it better and better. Recently I have learned from Brother Mawlam how to better color correct and grade video to give it a traditional film look.

Caryn Esplin

Visual Communication Emphasis

Sister Esplin spoke on the visual communication emphasis and the various opportunities involved. She had a nice display for us showcasing work from some of her students and gave examples of how visual communication relates to the modern world. I learned that graphic designers have big roles to play in media distribution and all walks of life, be it advertising, PR, politics, art, science, or even philosophy. Graphic design is really the art of controlling the eye and call to action of the individual.

Public Relations / PRSSA

During this class session I learned about the efficiency and impact of PR on both individual companies and the world. I learned that writing is foundational, not only to the PR industry but truly any line of professional work wherein individuals will communicate. I also learned that you need a hard-skill to be hired and excel. The best of these skills—the universal one—is writing. There were other statistics which are neither here nor there for me in the long run, like 2/3 of the PR department is female and PR exists to manage the image—public image—of the brand.

Jeff Hochstrasser

Advertising

Unfortunately for Jeff, when he came in for his presentation the projector was not working the way it should so his demonstration was limited. Either way he was still able to talk about the power and impact of advertising and the careers / opportunities it holds. I was able to learn that to get into various ad agencies you have to network with others and demonstrate your abilities both as a “creative” and as an “administrative.” This means the difference between coming up with artistic ideas and those who handle the business side of things. Left brain, right brain.

Andra Hansen

June 11th, 2015

Organizational Communication & Advocacy

Sister Hansen came in and spoke on some really good topics, I found it to be a great meeting. She pushed the ideal for each individual to think for themselves and to understand how to “learn”. It made me think about the balance between doing what you believe is right from sources you trust, and putting forth the effort to put things to trial. I learned that the same issue, cast in two different lights, produce two different messages and meanings. She talked about how she goes further into these principles in the class that she puts on, on campus.

Tyler Christensen

Understanding GRAD Plans

Tyler came and spoke about the logistics of grad plans and how to align yours. What he demonstrated and outlined are a lot of things that I not only already knew, but have already set up throughout my time here at BYU-I. One thing I learned was that in the near future the grad plan system is going to go through a redesign to make things more streamlined.
